Programs & Initiatives
The Ottawa County Business Advisory Council (BAC) plays a key role in connecting students to the workforce through various programs and initiatives. These include student boot camps, the Teacher Boot Camp, professional development presentations, and the C.H.O.O.S.E. Program.
These opportunities help students explore career paths after high school and equip teachers with valuable insights into local employers and the current job market. The BAC serves as an essential bridge between education and employment, preparing students for successful careers while supporting the evolving needs of the local economy.
CAREER
SHOWCASE
High School Sophomores spend the day connecting with local companies and discovering career opportunities within their own communities. They engage in hands-on activities with exhibitors, helping them explore various career paths. This event welcomes all types of employers giving businesses across different sectors a chance to meet and interact with their future workforce.
Each student receives a career passport based on their top three YouScience aptitudes and interests, with key questions to engage employers. Students are encouraged to engage with at least 10 businesses during the event.
This event is part of an ongoing effort to inspire and prepare the next generation of the workforce, fostering strong connections between education and local industries.
Ottawa County high school students in grades 9-12 can earn up to one academic credit (120 internship hours) through the CHOOSE Program (Career, Hosting, Opportunities, Outreach, Shadowing, and Experience).
This career exploration program provides students with real-world experience and entry-level skills across various industries. Participants can benefit from flexible scheduling, job shadowing with up to four employers, and hands-on career exploration, helping to bridge the gap between school and the workplace. Students must register before starting their internship.

YOUNG
WOMEN
LEAD
The Young Women LEAD (YWL) conference empowers high school freshman girls with leadership, confidence, and workforce skills. The inaugural event, held on March 21, 2024, at the Liberty Aviation Museum, featured keynote speaker Julie Carrier and interactive sessions with community leaders. The second annual event will be held in March 2025 in collaboration with Erie County and Huron County.
Young Women LEAD serves as a platform for young women to explore their leadership potential, engage with mentors, and build networks that support their personal and professional growth. Students gain exposure to various career paths and develop skills that are crucial for their future endeavors.
Student Boot Camps use YouScience data to select participants for career fields where they have an aptitude but not necessarily an interest. The goal is to expose students to new career options and highlight opportunities in Ottawa County.
Teacher Boot Camps, held in June each year, provide an immersive experience where educators visit local employers across multiple industries. They hear from staff about their career paths, tour facilities, learn about job opportunities, and gain valuable insights to better guide their students toward local career options.
